Yet, the simple act of stepping away from everything—taking an unplanned "me" day—can be one of the most powerful ways to reconnect with ourselves and work through our feelings.

While taking a full "me" day is a wonderful practice, it’s important to acknowledge that for many, this may seem like a luxury—a privilege not easily accessible. Single parents, those working multiple jobs, or individuals struggling to make ends meet often don’t have the time or resources to step away for a day of solitude and reflection. The idea of disconnecting, even for a few hours, may feel out of reach, and that’s okay. But even in the busiest of lives, small moments of emotional healing and space for introspection can still be found. You just have to get creative.

The Importance of Disconnecting

Between work, relationships, and the digital world, it’s easy for emotions to get pushed aside or buried under the weight of our busy lives. This is where taking a break—physically and emotionally—becomes essential.

  • During lunch breaks: If you work a traditional 9-to-5, lunch breaks are a perfect opportunity to carve out some time. Instead of scrolling through social media or chatting with coworkers, take a short walk outside. Leave your phone behind and focus on the sounds and sights around you. You’d be amazed how a few minutes outside in the fresh air can shift your mindset. An alternative could be stepping out for lunch as a little treat to yourself. If you're like me, always cooking and cleaning at home, going out for a meal can be a refreshing change. Forget your packed lunch - treat this as a break from the routine of recipes and dishes! Personally, I try to leave my phone behind, sit in the moment, and just enjoy the environment. It’s a small act of self-care that makes a big difference in recharging the day.

2. Incorporating Nature Into Your Daily Routine

It’s not always possible to take a long walk on the beach or hike through the woods, but you can still incorporate nature into your day in creative ways.

Pay attention to the sensations—the sound of chopping vegetables, or the scent of your favorite dish cooking in the oven. These tasks can become a grounding exercise.

Being a parent doesn’t have to mean sacrificing all personal time. In fact, involving your child or children in moments of mindfulness can be both beneficial to you and a great bonding experience.

You don’t have to talk, but simply walking in the open air can be restorative for both of you. Invite your child to notice the birds, clouds, or flowers with you. This doesn’t just teach them mindfulness but allows you to connect with nature and your child at the same time.
